All those who contributed to this book have been physical agents instructors in schools of physical therapy in the New York City area. As a result of a questionnaire sent to all schools of physical therapy in the United States, we discovered that our problems were similar to those of other instructors. This book evolved from our work as members of the committee. One major problem that confronted all of us was the difficulty of finding read- ing material for our students that not only contained the appropriate content but also was written in an educationally sound manner. In many cases, we were forced to consult books and journals published for members of other disciplines such as anatomy, physiology, and physics to obtain pertinent background information. In many cases, these sources were extremely difficult to read. Thus, we decided to write a book that contained the information we all agreed was essential and appro- priate for our own work and would be useful for others as well.
