Golf is played on a course of nine or 18 holes, the distance be tween holes ranging from under 100 to over 500 yards. The golf ball is played from the teeing ground, an area near each hole designated by two markers. To play the ball with the club from this area a small object, called the tee, is used to elevate the ball. The well mowed areas between the holes are called fairways. Flanking the fairways are unkept areas of grass and trees, known as the rough, which, be cause of the hazard they present, increase the challenge of the game. Other hazards are waterholes and bunkers (mounds, sand traps and depressions on the fairway). The hole is located in an area of very short and carefully maintained grass called the green. The hole is actually a round cup, four and a half inches in diameter, set into the ground. Its location is marked by a removable flag. The object of the game is to play the ball from each tee to each hole of the course with the least number of strokes for a low total score.
